Last year the founders and brain trust of the early days of Altiris debuted Arellia, and our security solutions of Local Security Solution (LSS) and Application Control Solution (ACS) — Built upon the same solid personnel foundation and the principles of delivering timely, rock solid, robust, secure management solutions.

Organizations that adhere to the principles of least privilege access generally to not allow users to log on with local administrator rights on Windows desktops.   Solutions are needed that enable the system administrators to control local application program rights independent of the local user.

Software updates that are released by Microsoft every patch Tuesday have an executive summary that provides an overview to the patch.   An example is -

“Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.” (As an example see http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms10-053.mspx )

Analysis of the patches publish show that by removing administrator rights companies will be better protected against exploitation of over 90% of vulnerabilities in all versions of Internet Explorer.

Application Control Solution from Arellia provides a set of privilege management features so that the system  administrator can remove local administrator rights from the end user and control rights on a per application basis.   This reduces the surface area for malware attacks.

Application Control Solution provides software privilege and rights management so you can control how applications function in your environment. The solution allows you to manage sensitive resources and functions and control access to them. By demoting or escalating rights and privileges of applications, they can be run without administrative privileges or escalating older applications to the administrator in order for them to function.

Arellia is hosting an Advisory Board meeting at the Symantec Vision conference on Monday April 12, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Arellia management team (including Michael Sainsbury, founder of Arellia and the former lead architect of Notification Server, and Kevin Stevens, a distinguished engineer from Altiris and Symantec) as well as Greg Butterfield (former CEO of Altiris and Symantec Group President), Dwain Kinghorn (a former Altiris CTO), and Jan Newman (founder of Altiris) will all be present at the meeting.

Arellia is soliciting feedback from both current and prospective Arellia customers.  The advisory board will review not only how Arellia currently extends and enhances the Symantec Management Platform, but also other areas where you would like to see additional products that integrate with Symantec.

Just like Altiris advisory board meetings that were held as part of the ManageFusion conferences, this is designed to be an interactive session.
